A magnitude of 5.3 earthquake hit far western Nepal on 3 October 2023 at 14.40 pm followed 26 min later by a significantly stronger 6.3 magnitude. As it took place in the daytime, it gave time for the people to relocate themselves to a safer place after the initial jolt, resulting in fewer human casualties. The epicenter of the earthquake was Bajhang district of the Sudurpaschim Province and the tremors were felt in six neighboring districts (Bajura, Achham, Doti, Baitadi, Darchula and Dadeldhura). It was recorded one casualties, 29 injured and a total of 2895 residential houses were fully damaged, 6140 houses were partially damaged, and 3524 houses incurred some level of damage and strong in Bajhang (update till 18 Oct, 2023). The continuous aftershocks have forced people to leave houses and live in open spaces.
Therefore, NRCS mobilized ERT members for collecting data and information in Bajhang district. As a result, NCRS supported 150hh with tarpaulin, Blankets, Mattress (P-Foam) and 50 Sets of Kitchen Kits to most needy on 19-21 October, 2023 in Jayaprithvi Municipality, Ward-01 & 05 of Bajhang district.
Thousands of people including many new mothers in the quake-hit areas have been forced to take shelter under makeshift plastic tents since the 03 October earthquake. People are started getting sick due to falling temperatures. Saving the displaced people residing in the open or under makeshift shelters heightened the risk of getting cold-related ailments to the vulnerable group such as pregnant/lactating mother, children, elderly etc. Therefore, NCRS is planning to reach out those people especially vulnerable group.
Provide warm clothes and nutritious food to vulnerable group (Elderly, Children, Pregnant & Lactating mother) in Jajarkot.
Provide temporary shelter support and non-food relief items (blankets, mattress, kitchen kits etc) to affected households in Jajarkot.
Support long-term recovery efforts.
