Program Overview
Following the devastating 2015 Mega Earthquake in Nepal, a three-year integrated recovery and rehabilitation program was implemented in Kavrepalanchok District to support earthquake-affected communities. The program focused on safe housing reconstruction, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), livelihood restoration, disaster preparedness, environmental protection, and child protection, ensuring holistic recovery and long-term community resilience.
Key Achievements & Cumulative Impact (2016–2018)
Safe Housing & Reconstruction
- Constructed 6 earthquake-resilient model houses (3 in Ryale and 3 in Methinkot) based on National Reconstruction Authority (NRA)-approved designs.
- Trained 401 local masons in earthquake-resistant construction techniques and distributed 401 masonry tool kits, strengthening local construction capacity.
- Installed 18 public hoarding boards featuring 10 key Build Back Better messages to raise awareness and promote safe, earthquake – resilient construction practices.
Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH)
- Constructed and operationalized 10 community water supply systems, providing safe drinking water access to hundreds of households.
- Formed 5 Water User Groups and trained 36 community members in water system operation and maintenance.
- Delivered WASH training to 224 community members, promoting safe water use, hygiene, sanitation, and water treatment practices.
- Provided complete maintenance tool kits to all water user groups to ensure long-term sustainability.
Livelihood Restoration & Economic Empowerment
Agriculture & Livestock Support
- Cardamom Farming: 51 farmers trained; 51,000 seedlings distributed.
- Vegetable Farming: 111 farmers trained; distributed plastic tunnels, seasonal seeds, and farming tools.
- Cow/Buffalo Raising: 49 farmers trained.
- Goat Raising: 95 farmers trained; 190 goats distributed.
- Formed 6 Self Help Groups (SHGs) for goat farmers and distributed 6 breeding bucks.
Income Diversification Programs
- Poultry Farming: 100 participants trained; distributed 4,000 chickens, CGI sheets, feeding vessels, and water pots.
- Bee-keeping: 30 participants trained; distributed 30 beehive boxes with bee colonies.
Community Organization & Capacity Building
- Conducted cooperative management and technical review training for 458 livelihood beneficiaries.
- Formed 15 Self Help Groups (SHGs) to strengthen savings, enterprise development, and community cooperation.
Disaster Preparedness & Community Resilience
- Conducted Disaster Preparedness & Community Care Training for 514 participants, including community members and students.
- Enhanced local disaster response capacity through awareness, preparedness planning, and practical safety training.
Environmental Protection & Climate Action
- Planted 5,080 trees, including 1,080 fruit plants, in collaboration with community and district forest offices, contributing to environmental conservation, biodiversity protection, and climate resilience.
Child Protection & Education Support
- Trained 427 students and child club members on child rights and child protection.
- Conducted child protection orientation sessions for 458 parents.
- Distributed school uniforms to 446 vulnerable children, improving school retention and attendance.
- Provided educational materials, sports kits, first-aid kits, and books to community schools and youth clubs.
- Installed 14 public information boards promoting child rights and protection awareness.
