Rukum (West) district is located in Karnali Province. The district is divided into East and West under Nepal’s new federal structure. It was heavily impacted by the civil war, resulting in casualties and destruction, causing a setback in development. Musikot is the district headquarters, with a population of 38,067, mainly comprising Dalit, Janajati, Brahmin and Chhetri communities. Most residents rely on subsistence farming, facing food scarcity for several months. Many migrate for better opportunities due to limited livelihood options and lack of government support. The COVID-19 pandemic worsened the situation, leading to job losses and return migrations, especially affecting vulnerable households. The region also faces challenges related to safe drinking water, hygiene practices, and natural hazards like fire, landslides and floods. The NCRS Sustainable Community Development with WASH & DRR project aimed to address these issues, focusing on livelihood improvement, health, hygiene, and disaster resilience in the Musikot Municipality of Rukum West. The projects started in March, 2020 and ended in April 2023.
